Cutting Solid Brass on an Industrial Wood Router: Mist Coolant, Trochoidal Toolpaths, and Feeds

Many operators believe that cutting non-ferrous metals like brass and aluminum requires a rigid metal mill weighing three tons. While heavy mills are ideal, a properly tuned, rigid industrial wood router can produce exceptional brass parts if you adapt your toolpath strategies.
### Material Choice: Alloy C36000
Always source **C36000 Free-Machining Brass** (containing ~3% lead). Unlike gummy commercial yellow brass (C26000) which sticks to tool flutes, C360 produces clean, discrete, discontinuous chips that evacuate effortlessly.
### Trochoidal (Adaptive) Toolpaths
Do not plunge straight into brass with slotting cuts. Use **Adaptive Trochoidal Milling**:
- The cutter moves along a continuous spiral curving path with a tiny radial engagement ($a_e = 10\%$ of tool diameter).
- The cutter spends a fraction of each revolution in the cut and the remainder in cool air, eliminating thermal buildup.
### Production Parameters for Brass on a Wood Router
- **Spindle Speed:** 14,000 RPM
- **Feed Rate:** 1,800 mm/min
- **Tooling:** 3.175mm (1/8") 2-flute solid carbide endmill with ZrN (Zirconium Nitride) non-stick coating.
- **Cooling:** Pneumatic venturi mist lubricator spraying ethanol/water mist directly into the cut zone to blow chips clear and prevent chip welding.
