In developing industrial clusters in Pakistan, you do not order custom breakout boards on Prime delivery. If you need a tool and have no money, you scavenge the parts and build it with your bare hands.
At age seven, I wanted to repair broken circuit boards but had no soldering iron.
### The Physics of the Scrap Iron
1. **The Heating Element:** I dismantled a broken electric room heater and harvested a $10\text{ cm}$ length of coiled Nichrome resistance wire.
2. **The Thermal Core:** Wrapped the nichrome wire around a heavy gauge scrap copper nail, insulating it with refractory plaster powder scraped from broken porcelain fuses.
3. **The Power Supply:** Wired scavenged 18650 lithium cells recovered from discarded laptop batteries in a 3S series configuration to supply $12\text{V}$.
Within 45 seconds of closing the switch, the copper nail reached $320^\circ\text{C}$—hot enough to melt lead-tin solder cleanly.
That experience taught me the most foundational lesson of my career: **Constraints are a gift.** Real engineering is not about having an unlimited budget; it is about knowing physics well enough to bend whatever materials are sitting on your bench to your will.
